Newsletter Delivery and Engagement Metrics Report

Edit in CMS

When a newsletter is published, Letterhead displays delivery and engagement metrics directly on the newsletter’s page.

Go to Emails and click any published edition — the Reports page loads automatically (instead of the composer). Metrics may take up to 1 hour after send time to appear, and update in stages:

  • every 15 minutes for newsletters published today;
  • every hour for newsletters published 24–36 hours ago;
  • once per day after 36 hours.

The chart shows volumes for key metrics (hover for exact numbers):

  • Sent — audience members targeted; usually your full subscriber list at send time minus immediately suppressed addresses.
  • Delivered — emails that reached recipient mailboxes.
  • Opens — recipients who opened the newsletter.
  • Clicks — total links clicked in the newsletter.
  • Delivery Rate — Delivered ÷ Sent.
  • Open Rate — unique opens ÷ Delivered.
  • Click-to-Open Rate — unique clicks ÷ unique opens.
  • Clickthrough Rate — unique clicks ÷ Delivered.
  • Bounces — bounced emails, with the count split into hard, soft, and other bounces, each with its own count and rate.
  • Unsubscribes — recipients who unsubscribed via the footer link.
  • Time to Read (minutes) — average reading time.
  • Readability Score — how easy your newsletter is to read.

The Opens by hour card shows when your readers opened this edition: a day-by-hour grid covering the first three days after send, with busier hours shaded darker. A line above the grid calls out the peak — the single day and hour window with the most opens — and hovering any cell shows its exact count. It’s the rhythm behind the send-time suggestion on the scheduling step (see How do I create and schedule a newsletter?): if your audience reliably opens on Tuesday mornings, this is where you’ll see it.

The card names the timezone the times are shown in. Right after a send it notes that opens are still being collected; the picture settles once those first days have passed.

You’ll see this card on newsletters Letterhead delivers itself. When a channel sends through a connected provider such as Iterable or Mailchimp, the record of exactly when each reader opened stays with that provider, so the card doesn’t appear on those editions — every other metric on this page still does.

Click the Opens metric on the Reports page to open subscriber-level open data: the email addresses that opened, the date, and the number of opens per address (repeat opens are totaled per subscriber). A search bar helps you find a specific subscriber.

You can also multi-select audience tags to assign or remove tags for everyone who performed that action. Tags apply once — they don’t automatically update for future activity — and you can select and reuse multiple tags.

Below the metrics table you’ll find a breakdown of every clicked link:

  • Total Clicks — all clicks, counting repeat clicks from the same recipient individually.
  • Unique Clicks — unique email addresses that clicked at least once.
  • Newsletter Preview takes you to the sent edition’s public page.
  • For how an individual subscriber interacted — opens, clicks, subscription events, and delivery activity — see the Audience Profile Activity Log.
  • Ran an A/B test? Results appear on this page too — see A/B Tests on Email Subject Lines.
