How to customize your newsletter using Heading and Paragraph blocks.

Edit in CMS

Heading and Paragraph blocks are the core text blocks in the composer. Drag one into your newsletter, then use the settings panel on the right to style it. For the full set of composer capabilities, see Working in Emails.

  • Heading Type — choose H1 through H6 to structure your newsletter, and set the font size.
  • Decorative Lines — draw horizontal lines on either side of the heading. See Decorative lines below.
  • Border and Background — add a border for emphasis or change the background color.
  • Font — adjust the font size, style, and color.
  • Padding — control the space between the content and the block’s border.

Paragraph blocks offer the same styling tools: border, background color, font size and style, and padding.

Give a heading horizontal lines on either side — a classic section divider where the lines fill the space around your title:

  1. Select a Heading block and open its settings panel.
  2. Turn on Decorative Lines.
  3. Pick the Line Color and Line Thickness to suit your design. The lines use your heading’s text color until you choose one.

The lines stretch to fill the space beside the heading, in the editor and in the delivered email alike. A heading too long to fit on one line wraps, and the lines stay short at the edges. Headings sitting inside a side-by-side (two-column) section don’t display decorative lines.

Instead of switching lines on block by block, you can make them the default for a whole newsletter: open the Styles tab, go to the Text section, choose a heading size (H1–H6), and turn on Decorative Lines. Every new heading you add at that size starts with its lines on — including headings created for you when you paste a Google Doc or Markdown document, or when the assistant drafts a newsletter for you. Applying your text styles to existing blocks brings the headings already in your newsletter along too, and any single heading can still switch its lines on or off from its own settings. The same default is available when you’re designing a company template.

Highlight text inside any text block and a tooltip appears for instant changes — no need to open the settings panel:

  • Bold and italic styles
  • Insert a link
  • Bullets or numbered lists
  • Font color — pick a color from the tooltip or choose Customize color for more options; this overrides your default font color for the selected text

To change the default font style and color for a whole block, use the Color and Font sections in the block settings panel instead.

Align a Heading or Paragraph block from the Font section of the settings panel — pick the alignment from the dropdown; no need to highlight the text.

Any block that supports background colors (Paragraph, Heading, Button, and others) can extend its background edge-to-edge across the email — useful for highlighting announcements, quotes, or feature stories:

  1. Select the block and open the Color section in the settings panel.
  2. Choose your Background Color.
  3. Turn on the Extend Background Color toggle.

The editor and preview update automatically to show the full-width background.

For newsletter-wide defaults and the other blocks’ styling options, see How do I use the new design settings?
