Managing Audience Members in Pending Confirmation Status

Edit in CMS

When someone signs up under double opt-in, they receive a confirmation email asking them to verify their subscription. Until they confirm, they sit in Pending Confirmation status. Once they confirm, they’re subscribed and receive your welcome email.

Double opt-in is enforced as an organization-level Audience Policy. If you’re a channel admin and want it changed for your channel, contact an organization administrator.

How long do members stay in Pending Confirmation?

Section titled “How long do members stay in Pending Confirmation?”

Indefinitely — until they confirm, or you change or remove them. The confirmation link itself may expire, but the status won’t change on its own.

Not from the app — there’s no way to resend the verification email in bulk or individually. Two things can help:

  • Contact support to verify whether the confirmation email was delivered and opened. If it wasn’t delivered, support can resend it on request.
  • Lots of stuck pending members? Support has tools to confirm them in bulk where appropriate, always in line with CAN-SPAM compliance.

Admins can manually switch a pending member to Subscribed (see re-subscribing audience members), but we don’t advise it — some people deliberately choose not to confirm.

If you decide to reach out anyway:

  1. Export the members with Pending Confirmation status.
  2. Re-import them with a status of Subscribed and a tag such as Pending-confirmation so you can identify them. Keep all other fields the same as in your export, since the import updates every field.
  3. Build a segment from that tag and send a one-off email explaining they subscribed to your newsletter — with a clear note that they can unsubscribe via the link in the footer if they didn’t intend to sign up.

This gives them an easy way out before your next regular edition.
