Letterhead release notes (2021)

We regularly make improvements throughout the week and summarize those changes for you all here.

Oct 1

Fixes:

  • Subscriber management: The ability to delete a subscriber had been temporarily removed due to some UI changes, we added it back and the delete button can now be accessed from the subscribers' table
  • Subscription confirmation page: We fixed a couple of cosmetic bugs on the confirmation page that shows after a person subscribes to a newsletter built and sent through Letterhead
  • Promotion type page: In the dialog box that shows on the promotion type page with the properties included in a promotion type, the image property was showing duplicated
  • https://store.tryletterhead.com/ Registration: For a brief moment, users trying to register through the store were getting a 500 server error, we quickly caught and fixed this bug

Fixes:

  • Newsletter template: We found and fixed a bug where newsletter drafts could not be converted to templates
  • Promotions in calendar view: The single promotion view page failed to open when clicking on any promotion in the calendar
  • Newsletter preview and test emails: We fixed several issues with different newsletter elements that were causing newsletter previews to fail to generate and test emails to fail to send

Improvements:

  • Letterhead navigation and tables: Letterhead’s navigation menu has been reskinned along with all of our tables to improve user experience and design
  • Account dashboard: The dashboard has been redesigned to be simpler and less crowded
  • Newsletter creation navigation: The Authoring tool is easier to navigate, and the workflow for creating a newsletter is better organized and intuitive
  • Newsletter custom CSS: We've added the ability for newsletter creators to write their own custom CSS to style newsletters
  • Copy/paste images into the newsletter: Images can now be pasted into the newsletter
  • Newsletter sections: Newsletter creators can now add one and/or two-column sections to the newsletter
  • Advanced subscriber segmentation: Segments can be created to filter subscribers who have opened/not opened a certain newsletter, and subscribers that have or do not have a certain tag

Fixes:

  • Newsletter test emails: We caught an MJML bug in some of our newsletters, which was preventing test emails to be sent

Fixes:

  • Promotion creation for advertisers: We identified and fixed a bug with promotion creation in the advertiser dashboard where the name of the newsletter that the promotion would be scheduled on, sometimes appeared as "Unknown newsletter"

Improvements:

  • Email sending limit (Letterhead ESP): Letterhead ESP can now support email sending for lists > 50,000 <= 75,000

Fixes:

  • Newsletter metrics (Letterhead ESP): For a brief moment, new newsletters sent through Letterhead showed the error "no reports available," this has been fixed  

Aug 27

Improvements:

  • Subscriber import (Letterhead ESP): We made several improvements to our subscriber import tool that resulted in faster imports and the ability to import larger lists of subscribers.

Fixes:

  • Newsletter table: The published section of the newsletter table was not sorting by date, and the sort column controls were not working properly.
  • Archive page (Letterhead ESP): For a moment, the error "Something went wrong" was showing when a user would try to subscribe to a newsletter on the newsletter's archive page.
  • Subscriber import (Letterhead ESP): When importing a csv file with a large list of subscribers the import was failing due to a timeout issue., this has been fixed.

Fixes:

  • Sender email address (Letterhead ESP): We fixed an issue where a custom verified email domain would change back to our default subdomain: @a.letterhead.email after sending a test email.

Fixes:

  • Export subscribers (Letterhead ESP): Subscriber export was returning error: "Sorry unable to export data at the moment"

Improvements:

  • Promotion types: We made some improvements to the promotion type page. Channel administrators (Pro plan and above) can now create and edit all promotion type fields including CPM and MJML.

Fixes:

  • Promotion package store URL: When a promotion package was deleted, it could still be accessed directly by its URL, this has been fixed.
  • Store marketplace: We fixed an issue where the first store visited on the store marketplace page was showing up at every link when trying to navigate to a different store.
  • Unsubscribe link: The unsubscribe link on newsletters sent through Letterhead's ESP had an invalid URL, this has been fixed.

Improvements:

  • Newsletter editor: Subject line and Preview text are no longer required in the authoring editor, creators can now create the content they want without having to follow a specific template.
  • Newsletter background color: The newsletter background color can now be changed in Settings -> Sending emails
  • Newsletter font color: The newsletter default font color can now be changed in Settings -> Sending emails, or in the newsletter editor by highlighting the text and selecting a color.
  • Manual promotion placement: Promotions can now be inserted manually in the authoring editor using promotion type placeholders, learn more
  • Letterhead ESP available for early access testing: Letterhead now has its own email service provider and subscriber management, available to creators who joined the waitlist to get early access.

Fixes:

  • Newsletter preview: The newsletter preview looked very different from how the newsletter appeared in the email, and links to buttons and images could not be tested in preview mode — this is not the case anymore and our preview looks way more accurate now.

  • Error messages: Some of our error messages had outdated information about how to contact our support center, we've updated the messages.

Fixes:

  • Button links:  We fixed a bug where links added to newsletter buttons were not saving.
  • Promotion types and packages edition: For a moment, every time a change was made to a promotion type or package, our system was requiring an image to be uploaded, even when an image had already been uploaded for the promotion type or package.
  • Promotions with images: We identified an issue where promoters could schedule promotions that required an image without uploading one, they now get an error and can't continue until an image is uploaded.
  • Letterhead menu: The links at the bottom of the app's main menu could not be accessed when the window was not maximized and sometimes zoomed out, this has been fixed with a scroll bar that shows up when the window doesn't have enough room for the menu.

Improvements:

  • Promotion approvals available to all users: After testing promotion approvals with a small group of Creators who opted-in to early access testing, we have released it to all users, learn more.

Fixes:

  • Promotions' statuses: We fixed an issue in the promotion approvals' workflow where new promotions were showing with the wrong promotion status of New instead of Pending.

Improvements:

  • Channel/Store description: We increased the character limit from 140 to 280, and added additional formatting options (links, italic, bold, numbered, and bullet points) to the store/channel description field.

  • Store banner: We've removed the size restrictions of the store banner to give Creators more flexibility and control over what image to use in the store.

Fixes: 

  • Stripe connection: We fixed an issue where the Connect button in Letterhead would not update to Connected after a Stripe account was connected successfully, which caused a lot of confusion.

Fixes:

  • Order price in the email notification: The total price in our email transactions was showing only one digit after the decimal, for example, $1.8 instead of $1.89, we now show 2 digits.

  • Package creation: It was possible for users to create packages without uploading an image, which then caused an error to contact support after the create button was clicked. We have now added a clear message in the package editor to show that a package image is required.

Improvements:

  • New transactional email: We've started sending emails, 24 hours before a promotion's publication date, to remind Creators to place the promotion.

Fixes:

  • Promotions holiday calendar: We found and fixed a bug where the "What days of the year do you skip?" calendar was not properly blocking any dates.

Improvements:

  • Authoring emails sent through Constant Contact: We added a tracking code to the emails we send through Constant Contact, so we have and can report newsletter opens if necessary.

Fixes:

  • Authoring emails sent through Constant Contact: We found and fixed an issue where users were unable to schedule newsletters using Constant Contact. 

  • Packages and promotion type images: We fixed a bug that caused newly uploaded package and promotion type images to not appear.

April 30

Improvements:

  • Promotions HTML templates: We made some style changes to our default promotion type templates to reduce left/right external padding in the promotions.

Fixes:

  • Images in newsletters: Our email template was making images full width, so they were overflowing the body of the email, we have set them to max-width which fixed this issue.

  • Authoring emails sent through Constant Contact:  We saw that Mailchimp's merge tags were appearing at the bottom of emails sent through Constant Contact, they have been removed.

April 23

Improvements:

  • Starter plan: We launched a new free plan called Starter, for newsletter Creators to sign up directly on our website.

  • Divider line break in newsletters: Authors can now add dividers to the newsletter in the Authoring editor.
  • Metrics cards: We added thousands separators to the numbers in the metrics cards shown in the dashboard, making larger numbers easier to read.

    April 16

    Improvements:

    • Promotion approvals available to early access testing: We released a new feature that will allow Creators to review, approve and request changes as needed to a promotion scheduled in their newsletter. This feature is available only to Creators who opted-in to early access testing

    Fixes:

    • Automatically update metrics through MailChimp: We fixed a bug where only the total subscribers' number was getting updated through Mailchimp, all other metrics fields were not changing.

    • Authoring buttons and images: Copying and pasting labels or link texts to buttons and images in Authoring was not working.

    • Authoring images: Small images were getting stretched out in the authoring editor, this has been fixed.
    • Promotion schedule: It was possible for users to schedule and clone a promotion without selecting a publication date, which then caused an error to contact support after the schedule button was clicked. We have now added a clear message in the promotion editor to show that the publication schedule field is required. 

    April 9

    Improvements:

    • Constant contact authoring integration: Authors can now integrate Constant Contact with Authoring to import list audience, send test emails, and schedule their newsletter for publication.

    Fixes:

    • Mailchimp list: For a brief moment, users were unable to select and save which Mailchimp list to use on the Settings -> Sending emails page.
    • Promotion type images: We fixed an issue where promotion type images that had been uploaded within the last two weeks or so, were not displaying on the store.

    April 2

    Improvements:

    • Promotion types custom schedules: In addition to setting default promotion availability across all promotion types, creators can now define custom schedules for individual promotion types.
    • Image upload restrictions: We've removed the image size and dimension restrictions upon upload, which will allow users to upload the images they want and then use our image editor to edit the image and complete the upload.

    • Buttons in newsletters: Authors can now add buttons to the newsletter in the Authoring editor.

    • Blockquotes in newsletters: Authors can now add blockquotes to the newsletter in the Authoring editor.

    • Audience categories: There's a new section in Settings-> General, for Creators to describe their audience by selecting one or more of the options available in each category.

    Improvements:

    • Mailchimp integration: We switched our Mailchimp authentication method from API key to OAuth to make the process easier and more secure.
    • Authoring images: Images uploaded in the Authoring editor can now have captions and links.
    • RSS feeds: Creators can now use RSS feeds to load scheduled promotions into their newsletter builder, learn more.

    Fixes:

    • Stripe connection: New Letterhead Creators were running into an error when trying to connect to Stripe, this was due to a bug that we quickly fixed as soon as we became aware of it.

    March 19

    Improvements:

    • Settings page: We reorganized the Settings page into four main sections: General, Selling promotions, Sending emails, and Integrations, so it easier to navigate and find what is needed.

    Fixes:

    • Order notification email: We found and fixed a bug with order notification emails, where the confirmation text was showing multiple times with some special characters.

      March 5

      Fixes:

      • Newsletter broken image issue: Some readers were seeing a broken image link in the heading of newsletters sent through Authoring. We found the root cause of the problem and fixed it.

      Feb 26

      Improvements:

      • Manual metric reporting: We can now manually enter metrics for promotions when our automated metric reporting is not used or needs to be corrected.

      Fixes:

      • Authoring images: Some images were not showing up in preview or test emails. This has been resolved. 

      Feb 19

      Improvements:

      • Newsletter font customization: We added a font picker and a color picker for text links in Authoring settings.
      • Newsletter scheduling process: We changed our newsletter scheduling workflow to force newsletter creators to send a test email before scheduling a newsletter, this was done to prevent creators from sending unfinished or non-proofread emails.
      • New Sales page: We added a page called Sales for Creators to view all their promotion sales in one place, which can be accessed from the Letterhead menu.
      • Promotion placement: Creators can now fetch and place Letterhead promotions in their newsletter via RSS.

      Feb 12

      Fixes:

      • $0.00 Packages: For a brief moment, $0.00 purchases could not be fulfilled on all Letterhead stores. This has been fixed.

      Jan 29

      Improvements:

      • Authoring Settings: Authoring now has its own settings page.

      Fixes:

      • Copy HTML: We found and quickly fixed a bug that caused the copy HTML link not to work for new promotion types.

      Jan 22:

      Improvements:

      • Discount codes: We added a new link to the Letterhead menu, Discount Codes, for Creators to generate percentage discount codes that they can give out to buyers to apply in their Letterhead store.
      • Test emails sending status: We added an error message with further instructions for the newsletter creator, that appears when a test email fails to send.

      Fixes:

      •  Newsletter legibility: We have addressed legibility issues for readers viewing Authoring newsletters from different email clients and devices.

      Jan 15

      Improvements:

      • Newsletter editor image upload: We have increased the image file size limit, for images uploaded to a newsletter in Authoring, from 150Kb to 1Mb.

      Fixes:

      • Newsletters marked as Published: We found and fixed a bug where published newsletters were not loading, the page was stuck in the content loader.

      Jan 8

      Fixes:

      • Promotion purchase: We found and fixed a bug that caused purchases of low-priced promotions (roughly under $30.00) to fail due to a misconfiguration on Stripe's side.
